Guru Dutt -Dev Anand : Great Friendships

“That is my shirt….”

Dev Anand must have said that when he saw a young choreographer wearing his shirt. What a coincidence. Star of movie Hum Ek Hain saw a ‘no one’ wearing his shirt. He must have flared up… but no. Dev was calm. He asked the person the secret. Easy guess. Same laundry! The star and choreographer had the same laundryman and he somehow replaced a star shirt with a no-one’s shirt.

Dev Sahab is known as a gentleman by everyone; inside and outside the industry. He was a star. But the person who wore that shirt was not destined to be a no-one. He was destined to be the most respected moviemaker of India. He was Guru Dutt.

Guru Dutt was a struggler then and that led to his big break. The incident made Dev and Guru great friends and they made a promise to each other. If Guru becomes a movie-maker, he will cast Dev and if ever Dev makes a movie, Guru will direct it.

Dev made Baazi and that was directed by Guru. It was a blockbuster. However, Guru was not able to fulfill his promise. He did it indirectly by producing CID starring Dev but directed by Raj Khosla. Another blockbuster. Dev still regrets that he never worked under Guru under Guru’s production house. One prime reason was creative differences between Chetan Anand and Guru Dutt.

Keeping that aside, Dev and Guru were great friends and created two legendary movies. Today when we hear about actors trying to belittle others, stories like this definitely make these legends appear bigger.

Rann | Critique | Direct From theatre

Rating-3/5 Stars

It all began with controversies- “Jana Gana Mana Rann…” a song that was obviously not retained; RGV returning after disasters like RGV Ki Aag and Amitabh Bachchan in a Media-centric movie. Potent mixture and the promos… awesome. Starcast- Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal, Rajat Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh and Mohnish Behl; sounds interesting. So, I woke up early, grabbed the tickets and entered the cinema hall… with great expectations but mentally ready to be disappointed.

Plot was simple. Vijay Harshwardhan Mallik (AB) plays a media baron who is losing TRPs. His son and son-in-law takes over and shakes hands with ‘bad’ politicians (Rawal). They do typical things we see every day on TV (read sting operations) and finally achieve the number. Honest and ethical, Vijay is easily duped by his son and he presents the news. However, cub-reporter Purab (Ritesh) finds the truth. He tries to bring the truth to fore and initially fails. Finally, Vijay turns against his own son and truth prevails. Uff… seems like old stale story we saw zillion times; may be in some different frame and media. However, the treatment of the story was good; if not brilliant.

Amitabh was apt. He had a medium sized role and he played it gracefully. Rajat Kapoor as his son-in-law was as usual fine. Paresh Rawal was a bit loud. His character was more a caricature. Ritesh did his job and soon will establish himself as a good actor. He is improving. The man who surprised me was Sudeep. Frankly, I didn’t knew him, but playing the role of Jai (son of Vijay; what else) he simply rocked. He was really good. Ladies had no significant role.

Overall, performances were good but the thing that lacked was strength in script. It was not that strong and was interesting in bits. Research about content lacked as too much typecasting was there. Cliché were overdone. Few dialogues were good but most of it was average. Background score was good.

Verdict: Watch it. May be its not in the league of Satya, Company or Sarkar but is as good as Sarkar Raj and far better than PI or CPD (Do you remember them?).

The Blue Notebook award goes to...

Welcome everybody to Results of first ever 'Blue Notebook'. We're mighty excited about it.

Ali: 2009 was a great year for us at TheReelMag. We started our journey on April 15th and now in 18th edition, we declared nominations for Blue Notebook- First Annual Celebration For Excellence In Cinema. We grew from a few to thousands of hits. Some highs and lows and see the response…

Sujoy: Yup… we started as two and many joined us in our endeavor to find the best in cinema. You remember, you had some reservations about Blue Notebook in the first place. See the crazy response. We never expected this… Mark my words, the road is endless, and we have just started.

Ali: Moreover, the results have been pleasantly surprising. So lets gear up. What do you think about the greatest controversy… Vidhu yelling at media?

Sujoy: Frankly telling, I am partly on Chetan’s side. Anybody who have read the book will agree with him to a great extent. I agree Vidhu had law with him but still…

Ali: And that brings us to the Best Story Category. The Award goes to… “ROCKET SINGH” for its stunning out of box story about normal people. The story was slightly inspired by Michael Dell’s life; we feel so.

Sujoy: Deserving. Though 3 Idiots team also deserve some applause for their script and Bhagat’s novel. Ali, sometime I wonder how the guys in 50’s and 60’s were able to extract such alluring movies with B&W colors and limited technology.

Ali: Sometimes constraints brings out the best…

Sujoy: Absolutely. Creating outdoors on stage and cutting reels to edit…

Ali: Next up is Best Art Direction… The Award goes to… “DELHI 6” for grabbing the beauty and chaos of Delhi and recreating the scenes. By the way Delhi 6 was my personal favorite.

Moving on to Best Editing Category. No prizes for guessing… The Award goes to “KAMINEY”.

Sujoy: Dear moifightclub, I agree that you didn’t agree with me nominating Paa for Editing Category but just like you, I also disagree. When I talked with friends around me, most of them all remarked that the sequencing of scenes were really good and I felt that it deserves it. I will take that happily. So, when should I attend your class…

Ali: Anyways, moving to the next category… Music made us proud at Oscars last year. Infact, music has been our strength from days of Alam Ara… The Best Music Category… And the Award goes to… “DELHI 6”… Truly… Rahman is great.

Sujoy:
Yeah. Rahman is back… NOTE to all fans of Dev D's Music- This was our first faux pas of the year. DEV D should have been nominated but somehow this happened. I guess that had offended many. Sorry boss… Won’t happen next year. Anyways, Ali, once I told you that cinema has no boundary… no language… and sometimes no sense as well. But I guess there is no category for the last one.

Ali: Point taken… Yes moving on to the next category… Best Movie in Foreign Language Category… the Award goes to… “INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS”… Tarantino is simply ahead of the rest.

and the Best Movie in Regional Language Category… The Award goes to… “HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY

Sujoy: Both movies are brilliant but I would like to mention two movies… In Bengali… Kaal Bela deserves a special mention. Its brilliant. Also… Avatar. Cameroon is a real genius artiste…

Ali: Why do you think Male and Female deserves to be in same category… you were bashed like anything for this. I love Sujoy-Bashing… Trust me on that :-) .

Sujoy:
We always say that this is a male dominated industry and see some nominations of past. Ladies who had no role got nomination with some really alluring performances. That belittle the latter ones. Actors are performers first and after that their gender comes in. You can compare greatness in Amitabh and Rani in Black but can you compare Rani with some arm-candy. That will be disgraceful for Rani. We wanted to recognize the best in cinema but not on the basis of their gender or screen presence. Another thing, Shahid missed the nomination by a whisker. Its just that we need to put a upper cap to the list. Don’t you think so. Bringing in Shahid meant putting someone out… That would have been inappropriate.

Ali:
Declaring the award of Best Acting Performance… And the Award goes to… “ABHAY DEOL

Sujoy: Why do we remember Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt… They were real showmen. They dreamt and created some finest works on celluloid. Have you seen Pyaasa. Its brilliant…

Ali: Yes Sujoy. Sometimes even the word brilliant is small sometimes… The Best Director Category… And the Award goes to… “VISHAL BHARDWAJ” for Kaminey. See his line up… Maqbool, Omkara and now Kaminey. And before we forget… Makdee and Blue Umbrella too.

Sujoy: Coming to the final category… All these components.. Editing, Art Direction, Music etc. etc. leads to?

Ali: Movie… Yes. Some movies are really perfect. Frame by frame… You know Sujoy, we have a short movie event as well.

Sujoy: Yes… Between Breaths… But don’t know something that what exactly is in store for winners…

Ali: What?

Sujoy: TRM have planned a lot… Tees, goodies and finally… vouchers. More details would come up later. Lets stay here only…

Ali: Sure… Finally, the Best Movie Award… There is a strong difference in opinion between our team and our readers. But… for us Readers are most important asset. We take their point. The Award goes to…  “3 IDIOTS”. However, our panel’s choice was "DEV D". Anyways… 3 IDIOTS also deserved it. That’s why they were right there on the list.

Sujoy: Finally, its over now. Blue Notebook was a success beyond our expectations. We were mesmerized by the response we got. Thank you for all the appreciation…

Ali: Sujoy… don’t forget the bashings…

Sujoy: I love them… Thank you for everything…

Ali: Thank You to each and every one who participate in this celebration of cinema

and FINALLY, summing it all up…

Best Movie: 3 Idiots; Best Director: Vishal Bhardwaj; Best Actor: Abahy Deol; Best Regional Movie: Harishchandrachi Factory; Best Foreign Movie: Inglourious Basterds; Best Story: Rocket Singh; Best Music: Delhi 6; Best Editing: Kaminey; Best Art Direction: Delhi 6.

Disclaimer: The results are based on Poll conducted on website. Panel has not vetoed any decision.

Exciting releases; Bolly Cinema 2010 | Under Lens

2009 was a spectacular year by all means. Movies spilling their magical spells and creating an auro (aura) all around. From Dev D to 3 Idiots, movies have been stretching the walls of conventional cinema and raising the bar for the makers of the next decade. Do you remember the last time we saw movies at par with Dev D, Gulaal, Straight, Kaminey, Paa, Firaaq, APKGK, Rocket Singh, 3 Idiots… all in one year. May be sometime before I born…

Cut to 2010… first year of a new decade. Some great movies are expected to be released this year. Lets have a look over the ten most awaited movies…

1.       ISHQIYA: Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan are good actors but this doesn’t make movie a potent mixture. Naseeruddin Shah and mentorship of Vishal Bhardwaj does so. Ishqiya is going to be a bold and smart movie, atleast the promos suggests so. I am in, what about you?

2.       MY NAME IS KHAN: Kajol is back after Fanaa. Interestingly with Shahrukh and the person who is behind this movie is Karan Johar. Sharukh is suffering from Asperger syndrome and the movie is all about him with a backdrop of 9/11. After NY and Kurbaan overdose of terrorism, the selling point of this movie is stressed to be on romance.

3.       RAAVAN: Abhishek, Aishwarya and director Maniratnam. The trio is going to create magic all again. Accidents and misfortune had already marred the making, I hope controversies don’t stop it from the release.

4.       RANN: Amitabh Bachchan and Media! In 80s they were like parallel roads and now AB is working in a movie all about media.

5.       KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK: Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone are two hot selling cakes of Indian cinema. While Farhan has proved that he is really good, Deepika has to prove a lot. KCK is definitely going to be a cool movie. But will the pair sizzle?

6.       DOSTANA 2: Love birds are back. Abhishek and John… the guys who made society comfortable about gays. Now, with news of Riteish and Shreyas in, I guess there won’t be a lot for Katrina to do. I just hope it doesn’t turn to be something on the lines of Golmaal.

7.       TEEN PATTI: 21 is the game. A student who is a Maths whiz kid outsmarts the professionals at Casino with the help of a professor and a team. That was 21, the movie. TP is a remake with biggies like Sir Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bachchan. Watch out for R. Madhwan. He is going to surprise you all.

8.       RAJNEETI: Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar (not confirmed), Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in a movie by Prakash Jha based on politics… still want a reason?

9.       KITES: Barbara Mori and Hrithik Roshan and quite ignored Kangana, the movie has already raised eyebrows for the affair between the Mexican Lady and Indian smarty. Promos are… oomph.

10.   MILENGE MILENGE: Promos suggest it to be a movie conceived in 90s and released after two decades. Man, why am I waiting for it? Because I loved Jab We Met and don’t want to miss the last movie of the erstwhile lovebirds- Kareena and Shahid; till something happens…

2010… I am ready for you… Are you ready?

Making my short movie | Gyandeep's Take

The injection syringe that I had used IS the most pivotal element in my film. Would you believe that everything starting from the syringe, the red bag.....and the actors were decided on the day of the shoot itself?

It is true.

I woke up at about 6:30 AM on 11th November, 2009 and I had to leave to join a (shitty) job the other day. The last date to submit the film was 16th November. Hence, I was in a dilemma - whether to or not to shoot the movie. I rang up my friends - Durga, Prabhanjan, Palo. They were up from their beds too early and were brimming with enthusiasm. How could I let go of such an opportunity?!

We went to Durga's house where we stuffed the red colored bag with newspapers and stuff. Hmmm. Now, it looked like some heavy luggage. Next we went to a pharmacy and got us self a syringe. We had decided to shoot on a bridge. But, Durga was adamant that the bridge would be crowded and we needed a somewhat desolate place to shoot. Prabhanjan and Palo (who acted as cinematographers; Palo also has a brief role as the guy who refuses to give me a lift the first time) were not ready to leave the bridge. But, what about me? I went in favor of Durga and we took off, not before finding some red colored liquid, towards NH217. After 30 minutes of scouting, we found a spot and we started our shoot. The result was not-so-good. So, we traveled some more distance and found an ideal spot when I located the milestone. Voila!

Now, read carefully.

I sat on the milestone (the first shot) and the camera rolled (it was a 7 Mega pixel SONY digital camera :P) and thus began our shoot. Now, there was another problem - the guy whom I was to ride pillion with was not yet decided. Durga told me that he would do it. We agreed. The hitch was that Durga was fresh at bike-riding. I rang up another one of my friends, Sagar, who was still sleeping. He told me that he would come to see our film shoot. I did not tell him that he had been assigned a role. Despite of fretting over the delay, we canned a few shots such as Palo refusing to give me a lift etcetera. After what seemed like an eternity, Sagar came. When he learned that he had a role to play, he agreed readily to be a part of the film. Another problem was how to show myself drawing blood from my arm. I decided to leave that shot. Instead, Prabhanjan (who sat pillion with Palo on another bike, with both their backs facing each another) took a close-up of me, Sagar and the syringe. I was not sure whether or not it would work. Later, I had to eat my brain as I thought Prabhanjan had taken the menace out of my face and transferred it onto screen. And Sagar's face was impassive; he concentrated fully on his driving, oblivious to any activity going on behind him. I loved that.

We shot about 2 minutes of stuff in 3 hours and we learnt one thing - It is always easy to ridicule any film but we never see the hard work that has gone into the making of the film. But anyway, that's really another story. We went home and after I returned from Bhubaneswar 2 days later, we did the editing and voice-over at Durga's residence. Now, another thing - It is always so so so difficult to cut a single second from your movie. And when, it is a one-minute film, the boulders are sky-high. I had come up with two names - NEEDLEPRICK and BLOOD ELEMENT. Sagar, Prabhanjan, Palo, Durga went for the latter and I, for the former. But, since it was majority versus minority, I went with the flow. You can never make a film alone and my friends stood by my side, steady as rocks. We came up with our company's name - KUBRICKFANS. Sagar and Durga loved it. We submitted the film on 15th of November, 2009. We were on!

The film did not make it to PFCOne 2010's Competitive section. We all were heart-broken. I had shown it to Ali and he had loved it. My friend Inayat, studying at JIPMER, had told me it was good (it is always difficult to elicit a response from that idiot). I was supremely confident. But....

And then, i read an article by Anurag Kashyap. He had written, "Don't care about anything. If you have a story to tell, do whatever - BEG, BORROW, STEAL - but, get out there and shoot your movie". That gave me some air to breathe. There are still 8-9 months for the next competition but I am already raring to go !!

Anyone who has a feasible idea can mail me at gyandeep.gandu@gmail.com. Criticism is always welcome. And finally, here's my film, dedicated to each one of you. Enjoy!

Chance Pe Dance Movie Review | Critique

Rating- 0.5/5 stars

Just came out of the theatre totally disgusted. Dear Ken Ghosh, I liked Ishq Vishq. I found Fida interesting but dear… you really disappointed me in this movie. This is totally avoidable. I guess this happens when a person tries to do two… at times three much; in one take. Promos were cool, videos were nice but movie… wait for the movie to come on idiot-box. Give 150 bucks in charity rather than watching this much hyped, a lot awaited trash.

Lets see. Music… just okay. Dance… watchable. Acting… just better than average but story… I couldn’t find any. Man, many lives in 121 minutes is no story. Shahid as Sameer is an actor. Rejected and then selected and just before the interval… betrayed. Then he becomes a teacher and finally participates in an event. End of two hours, he is not a teacher and not even an actor. The scope of showing him as a teacher or an actor is reduced to merely two odd scenes. Is that a story you wanted to present, Ken? I am sorry but you failed… yourself and all the moviegoers.

Shahid… he was not good beyond those abs and collars. Six-packs doesn’t mean a blockbuster. He was convincing as an actor… but only in bits and this cannot work when you want to carry an entire movie on your shoulder. Genelia was totally herself. But now, I think; she must seek avenues beyond those cute eyes and awesome smile. Mohnish Behl was apt. There was nothing for him to do. Satish Shah was totally wasted.

But there were a few silver linings as well. First. The kid who was Genelia’s brother… He was really good. Another really special mention. Parikshit Sahni was really brilliant in few scenes he had. As father of Shahid (and Madhwan’s in 3 Idiots), his presence added something worthy to watch in this fiasco (not 3I).

To sum it up, I would like to say that actors were not the failure… it was the presentation that messed up everything. Just avoid. However… if you are a dance freak… watch for a few dance sequences and an interesting introductory scene. But that’s it. Nothing else…

Worst of 2009; Ali's view | Under Lens

As much as we had good films in 2009 we also had bad ones too. Well there have been many who made us say ouch and scratch our heads. Here's my list of top 5 err... bottom 5 of Hindi Cinema 2009.

Billu- Well when king Khan hams, everybody listens. I mean this is a shining example how a single scene can ruin a ok movie. The climatic scenes, left me feeling is this Shahrukk himself or is it one of many actors who parody him and mock him. Such Overacting, he gave his immitattors run for their money. Beat this.

Kal Kisne Dekha- Well Jackie Bhagnani had to be launched, but somehow papa Bhagnani was a bit lousy in getting a writer for this movie. KKD is boring, bad and what not. well atleast KKD made to one end-of-year list ;) . By the way a few songs were tolerable, but suffered because of a bad film.

Kambakht Ishq- What does one do to a movie that is pure lame; umm lets see throw in some Stallone, or some other hollywood b-listers; no people we're are not stupid; please don't serve us this sexed-up crap

Main Aur Mrs. Khanna- Well a critic had remarked for this, "Main Aurr Mrs Khanna is what they call a “home production” in Bollywood slang. It’s the kind of film a star agrees to do in exchange for a fat salary that pays for his or her dream home. When the deal is so good, you don’t raise questions about the script."

Dhoondte Reh Jaoge - You see title suggests us what it is; it says "Dhoondte Reh Jaoge". We'll we sure couldnt find much into film. Bad performances, silly plot and the list goes on and on and on...

Bollywood 2009; Sujoy's flashback | Under Lens

Wow… 2009 was rocking. A lot changed in last 12 months, atleast the way world looked at our cinema.

Dev D changed the way we looked at our heroes. They were more vulnerable to lures of wine, woman and drugs. Delhi-6 changed the way we looked at our neighborhood and Hindu-Muslim unity. Straight explained that Gay is not odd or pervert. They are as human as anyone we come across and we don’t have any right to be prejudiced.

Sikander glorified the beauty of Kashmir and presented it from perspective of the children suffering in the valley. New York justified the American perspective. They were wrong in torturing people after 9/11 on the basis of roots and religion but somebody need to get over it and start afresh. Kambakkht Ishq was trash and reclaimed that a bad movie cannot be saved by any means.

Kaminey was all about a new face of Bollywood that was hard hitting and very mean. Shahid might have missed Blue Notebook nomination but have established himself. Wanted was rebirth of single-screen theatres. Movie earned a large chunk of Box Office collection from small sectors. With Jail, Madhur raised his bar and so did Neil and Mugdha. Welcome back Lataji…

Amitabh Bachchan got himself introduced once again with brilliant performance in Paa. Vidya also reinvented herself. Rocket Singh was apt act by Ranbir. Hat trick of off-beat movies by Shimit Amin. Finally, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 3 Idiots, allegedly based on 5% of Five Point Someone. It was an attack on the current education system. Brilliant act by the idiots. However, Chetan claims cannot be ignored so easily…

While you recall all the stuff, we declare the results of Blue Notebook.

Musical Dostana | Cine Talk

When I was looking at the back of the cover of “Pyar Impossible”, I noticed something which I have been noticing quite frequently in the recent times. There is a track in the album, “pyar impossible” which is sung by Dominique Cerejo & Vishal Dadlani. The music is composed by Salim-Suleiman.

Now, Vishal in himself is a renowned music director. The duo Vishal-Shekhar has given us many chartbusters. And this is not the first time that he has sung a song for some other composer(s). Gadbadi-Hadbadi (Rocket Singh: Salesman of the year), Kurbaan hua (Kurbaan), Barso yaron (London Dreams), Dhan-te-n an (Kaminey) & Nazara hai (8x10 Tasveer) are some of the latest chart toppers that feature Vishal as the singer, but have different music composers.

But he is not the only one in the league. In fact, it is kind of a growing trend in bollywood. Remember Billo rani (Dhan-Dhana-Dhan Goal), Mumbai nagariya (Taxi no. 9211), Ek lo ek muft (Guru), Ahista-Ahista(Bachna ae haseeno) & Small town girl (Bachna ae haseeno)?? ... all of them have different composers as their singers. In billo rani, Anand Raj Anand sang for Pritam, & in Mumbai nagariya & Ek lo ek muft, Bappi Lahiri sang for Vishal-Shekhar & A.R.Rehman, respectively, while Ahista-2 saw Lucky Ali singing for Vishal-Shekhar, & Shankar Mahadevan gave his voice to Small town girl, for Vishal-Shekhar again.

It is good to see how music directors are appreciating the talent of other music directors, thereby developing a healthy spirit of competition. And the best part is that, we, the listeners, are getting quality music. I hope & wish that this multi-talented lot of bollywood composers will continue to deliver us chartbusters like this.

What lead to Heath Ledgers death ? | Hammers High

Unthinkable happened on 22 January, 2008. Heath Ledger, aged 28, had expired. As shockwaves swept the entertainment industry, the question remained. Why?

Few days before his death, Heath had discussed with his co-star that he had been having trouble with his sleep. He said to his co-star, “Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. ... I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.”

His death had a lot to do with role of Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’. This is because, to prepare for his role, he kept himself locked in his room for days together staying awake for days. He did so, to understand Joker, his psyche and his chaotic ways.

Although Heath had always had Insomnia, but Joker role escalated it to a greater degree.
Moreover it all grew worse, when he was shooting The Dark Knight, the hectic schedule took toll on him.

All this meditation with character of Joker, payed off superbly, as Heath pulled off one of best roles in history of cinema. He nailed the role perfectly. He added details that weren’t present to even original Joker from comic book. He gave us one of best villains of all time.

But alas, he had given too much to Joker. He could no loner sleep in peace anymore; this eventually lead to his sleeping pill overdose.

Sadly a budding career came to a sad end.

Dear Heath, you will be missed.

The 18th Edition

Editor's Pen: Nomination Time!!!

Hi Everyone...

Renie@IndiBlogger... Thanks for appreciating our work. We loved your comments. They were like something really precious... (to know more  click here)

A very eventful year has finally arrived. 2009 has been a great year. Some experiments and our arrival. I frankly believe that 2010 will be a phenomonal year and by 2012... if the world survives, we will be right there in your desktops... and laptops... and netbooks. World is changing too fast.

Now when Blue Notebook nominations are in front of you @ a single scroll down the page, you may ask; who the hell are you to rate movies. Well, we may not be biggies. Infact we are just kids... But what we are has a very simple answer- WE ARE PUBLIC. We are the ones who watch the movies in theatre...

How we arrived to the nominations is interesting. After watching more than 100 movie this year, we knew who are the best. Sorting them needed discussions. Rishabh, Gyandeep, Anurag, Vinayak, Akshay, Apoorv and many friends including the bubbly, Neha were at a call distance. Hours of mind wrecking and hundreds of recharge cards led us to the final list. For regional languages, we asked our friends to pick movies and we watch each movie that in our cerebral capacity.

So... tell us what you liked and what you hated on any forum you want to discuss... Facebook, Twitter or Orkut. Waiting...

Love...

Kaagaz Ke Phool |Critique- Remembering the Best

Gurudutt was a legend. But today even some self-proclaimed film enthusiasts haven't seen much of the legend. I was tongue-tied when I saw this saga...

“Bichchde Sabhi Bari Bari…” the song picturised on Guru Dutt and created by S. D, Burman, truly portrays how the near ones leave you with destiny in odd times. An emotion that took a toll of the cinematic genius. Failed marriage had more pain than the analgesic influence of cinematic success. Somewhere this classic rated at par with Pyasa has an autobiographical touch. Incidentally, Pyasa too had a similar flavor.

Suresh (Guru Dutt) is a movie director who cannot compromise with the quality of his work. His estranged wife doesnot want to return to him because her parents are too ‘big’. His brother-in-law (Johnny Walker) is a stud and is sympathetic with him. One night, Suresh meets a girl- Shanti (Waheeda Rahman) and lends her his coat. She comes to the shooting to return the coat and is captured by camera. Suresh has a new actress for his saga in process. Love blossoms between them but his daughter Pammi (baby Naaz) doesn’t like this. As a result of her expressed opposition, Suresh and Shanti decides to part their ways. Destiny puts Suresh on backfoot and he loses everything. Will Shanti return to him? This makes the plot a classic.

Few directors of Indian Cinema became a part of folklore. Guru Dutt was one of them. Kaagaz Ke Phool tells how even great people fells prey to the vicious games of destiny. How tll figures are subtly grounded. In the last scene when he dies, nobody pays tribute to him. His body stinks and shooting becomes more important than the legend- Suresh Sinha. Today, when only few people remember him, it seems that he was just in his presumption. We take years to create demigods and forget them in seconds.
