French Comedies | Under Lens

The French have always been amongst one of the finest film making nations. They have excellent tradition of making excellent comedies. Here is our list of three French comedies, that are must watch in our view.

Amelie
Jean-Pierre Jeunet creates a world of color, movement, romance and whimsy in a film that became a sensation in France and charmed audiences around the world. Audrey Tautou is delightful as a spirited waitress determined to help those around her find love and happiness, although her own romantic adventure proves to be a challenging one. Light as a feather, Amelie presents an idealized Paris that was shot on location, but which, through visual effects and eye-catching art direction, has the fantasized look of a Hollywood soundstage. Actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz co-stars as Amelie's love interest. A Cesar Award-winner for Best Film, Director, Music and Production Design. By the way it was also nominated in best foreign film category along with Lagaan at the Academy Awards.

The Closet
Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu top the cast of this spirited comedy from the director of The Dinner Game. An accountant at a condom factory learns he is about to be fired. A neighbor suggests that he pretend to be gay so the company will be wary of a discrimination lawsuit if they let him go. As the deception takes root, co-workers and other associates who previously found him dull now find the accountant to be exciting and mysterious. "...a bonbon spiked with mirth and malice...a delicious treat" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). Also starring Thierry Lhermitte and Michele Laroque. excellent watch

L'aile ou la cuisse
As timely today as it was when it was released over 30 years ago, this comedy stars French legend Louis de Funes (of "Les Gendarmes" fame) as Charles Duchemin, the owner of a restaurant guide. The film is very funny indeed, with some inspired moments. Can be enjoyed by old and young alike. Altohugh, this movie has slapstick comedy but it has many moments that will leave you in splits.
