Others Who Missed The Final List | Uttkrishtt 2012

These characters won our hearts over ages. They inspired us. They helped us push the envelope. They taught us lessons no textbook shared. They are our heroes...

Ajay Rathore (Aamir Khan - Sarfarosh) : A young IPS who opted IPS over IAS because he wants to weed out criminals proactively. With a small team he takes on naxal-terrorist nexus spanning across borders. His challenges include people in masks and political interventions. In difficult times he keeps his ethics and moral values above everything including his personal welfare.

Bhagat Singh (Manoj Kumar - Shaheed) : Sardar Bhagat Singh is perhaps one of the most respected revolutionary of Indian Independence. Born in family of revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh had patriotism flowing in his veins. When he grew, he took up the challenge and emerged as one of the biggest threat to British Empire in India. He was instrumental in giving direction to the armed revolution.

Mahesh (Mehmood - Kunwara Baap) : It doesn't take herculean tasks to be a hero. Sometimes even simple acts of generosity count more. Mahesh finds a destitute and despite of his meager resources, decides to adopt him. He assumes the role of father. When the child suffers from polio, he does whatever he can do. However, the child-father bonds suffers a setback when the real parents reconcile. At this point, Mahesh does the right thing despite of the fact that he cannot imagine his life without the child.

Murli Prasad Sharma (Sanjay Dutt - Munna Bhai MBBS) : Munna is a local goon. A simpleton who has adopted to the lifestyle of Mumbai underbelly. However, his family in village believes that he is a doctor. When his secret comes out, he feels embarrassed and decides to get a medical degree. He forges records and exams and get admission in a reputed college. Though he doesn't become a doctor he teaches doctors a couple of things about their profession and humanity in general.

Pradhan (Anupam Kher - Saaransh) : What an old man can do? Pradhan's son died in an mugging incident in US and he is running from door to door to get his son's ashes. He also fights a local politician who took advantage of a girl by promising her marriage. His success or failure becomes secondary as the objective is so strong.

Raj (Raj Kapoor - Shree 420) : There are three stages in life of a hero - beginning, fall and rise. Raj is a simpleton who is adorable is his own ways. He falls in trap of greed and becomes a fraud. He cheats numerous people and becomes rich. Later he realizes that in this process he killed his goodness and decides to do the right thing.

Raj (Shahrukh Khan - Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) : Raj loves Simran but Simran's father has fixed her marriage to his childhood friend's son. Though Raj can run away, he decides to win hearts and take away his girl with honor. Raj proves a point by being a good lover-boy, a good son and a good person.

Raju (Raj Kumar - Waqt) : Raju is an embodiment of manliness. He is not a gentleman. He is more or less a crook or thief with some ethics. He has some rules by which he plays his game. As the story progresses, he comes out as a very strong character with a heart of gold. Circumstances might have rubbed against him badly, he still is person one can vouch for.

Ramprasad Sharma (Amol Palekar - Golmaal) : A street smart young man who tricks his boss into believing that he has a twin brother. Problem comes up when boss wants to see his brother and give him a job. He decides to play double role. To keep the story going, he creates a fake mother and his mother creates a fake sister of hers. Th spice it up all, boss' daughter falls for the non-existent brother.

Shambu (Balraj Sahni - Do Beegha Zameen) : Shambhu is poor but has his self-respect. His father Gangu took a debt and worked hard to pay it off. But ever after hard work, due to cunning ways of Zamindar, Shambhu has to pay 235 rupees for his land. He decides to go to Calcutta. He works hard but remains honest under all circumstances. But fate want it other way round. Shambhu loses his land.

Vijay Verma (Amitabh Bachchan - Deewar) : Vijay's father was humiliated and he was branded as a child. The angst against the world puts him on wrong track. The rebel in him is to be feared. The brilliance in him is to be admired. His sensibilities are directed only towards his family and love. He is a person who has seen so much hatred from world that he can only return in the same currency.

Kaante - Reservoir Dogs Mega Review | Critique

Rating: Reservoir Dogs - 4 Stars; Kaante – 3 Stars
The film that launched career of much loved director Quentin Tarantino, 'Reservoir Dogs' is an evergreen cult film. It is a heist movie, but with a difference.

There is no Heist shown in the movie. The movie is set on events after the Heist. Partly, because of budget constraint and partly by design, so that film remains about what happens after the robbery.
Unofficial Hindi remake came in the shape of ‘Kaante’. It was released after multiple delays in release date. (It probably became only delayed film to get such success). Spiced with songs, loads of the choicest curse words and surprise package in the form of Mahesh Manjrekar’s superb debut as an actor, it worked big time for Indian Audience. In fact, it was probably the biggest hit of the year.
Considering the fact that Hindi movies have a longer running time they incorporated Heist and back stories of almost all characters as opposed to Reservoir Dogs. They played to the gallery whenever possible, thus taking out many shocking scenes from the original such as Torture scene of the Kidnapped Police Officer; it had a scene where thugs in kill of an arms supplier of Kashmir, silly if you ask me but it clicked.

At time of release of Kaante there were voices of concern from Hollywood about it being copy of Reservoir Dogs, but if you study Kaante closely, it is a loving remake of Reservoir Dogs.
Moreover, the original parts of Kaante were actually good. Many twists of original were improvised and are not blind copy paste of ‘RD’ (Ok many have been taken of ‘Unusual Suspects’). In fact, detailed back stories each character in Kaante had, was praised by Tarantino himself.
In fact, for many Indian audiences (including me), Kaante was first introduction to Reservoir Dogs and thus to Master Tarantino himself. What else can you ask of a remake?

Viruddh | The Critique

Jessica Lal Murder case and similar incidents have inspired many movies, Viruddh is one of them. Largely inspired and beautifully written, movie is very straightforward in story telling without anything that can be edited after the final print released. Director Mahesh Manjrekar is credited with some great works of cinema like Vaastav and Astitva, and Viruddh is in the same league.

An old couple is living a peaceful life and to add more pleasure, their son comes to India from London with his girlfriend. Happily couple gets them married. Everything is pictured perfect till now but not after that… On eve of his birthday, son gets killed outside a pub while saving some girl. Aghast at the episode, couple lodges complain against a bigshot who with the help of his links proves that their son was a drug peddler. Now, what will the old couple do? Live with the stigma that their son was a criminal. It’s an insult to their son who was perfect in all possible ways.

Amitabh Bachchan as father Vidyadhar and Sharmila as the strict yet loving mother Sumitra was perfect as couple. The chemistry between them was just perfect. May be I underestimate it when I say perfect. The small fights and sweet romance were the moments of first half while their care for each other was simply spectacular performance-wise. Sanjay Dutt’s role as a neighbor was a small one but his impact was outstanding. His support shaped the climax. John was apt. This was one of his better performances.

Watch this movie to see this scene… In a tough moment, when both Vidya and Sumitra are about to cry, Vidya asks for tea. Sumitra leaves and cries in isolation. Next scene, Vidya and Sumitra comes to bedroom and Vidya asks for tea. Sumitra says that she forgot about it. Vidya says that he no longer wants it. Such scene might have been repeated in Indian Cinema umpteen times but the chemistry between the two legends is simply incomparable.

Why did Sanjay Dutt buy arms? | Hammers High

We all know Sanjay Dutt possessed Arms, but do we know WHY. Why would he want to buy rifles? Was it for the sake of it?
♦♦♦
December end 1992, riots in Mumbai.

Sunil Dutt, a Gandhian, set off to help riot victims. The Dutt residence soon became a point where relief material was collected.

During that period Dutt family received anonymous threats on the phone. The threats ranged from killing male members of the family to, molestation and rape of the two daughters of Dutt family.

Things took an ugly turn when Sunil Dutt was attacked Jogeshwari and Behrampur. Threats continued, and finally Sanjay Dutt logged a complaint with the Police. Dutt Sr. plea wasn’t attended to by the police. Disillusioned, Sanjay was worried about his family.

Later that day he told an army officer, who guarded the Dutt residence that night. Next day on Sanjay was worried again.

Sanjay’s told his friends Hanif Kadawala and Samir Hingora about the same. Both suggested Sanjay to get automatic weapon to safe guard the family. After initial hesitation Sanjay agreed, and in and week of January his friends arrived with the rifles accompanied by a man named Salem.

(NOTE- In those days, underworld had known connection with Bollywood. So )
