True Grit stood by the meaning of its name though lost the race. Ten nominations without winning even one honor; though that hardly makes it any lesser gem. True Grit won hearts… but failed to get the big one… as a matter of fact, any of them. This news robbed peace of many minds and many more disagree with the results of Academy Awards. Big movies like Inception, The Social Network and The King’s Speech grabbed respectively 4, 3 and 4 Oscars providing some nail-biting moments in the Kodak Theatre.

This Oscars would be remembered as one of the closely contested Academy nights. Never had the viewers been so divided in their opinion. While Inception and TSN relied more on the technology, True Grit and TKS relied more on the content (symbolically; Inception and TSN had great content too but they represent technology advancements). The big honors, i.e. Best Picture and Best Director both went to TKS leaving behind disappointed fans of True Grit, Inception, TSN, The Fighter and Black Swan. However, except True Grit, fans of all of these had some better moments. Black Swan got Best Actress. The Fighter got both Actress and Actor in Supporting Role. Inception and TSN ruled the technical awards. The lone loser was True Grit. It had many nominations yet failed to convert any of them. May be this was the real test of the grit.

Brilliantly made Inception won over its strengths. It won honors for Visual Effects, Sound (Mixing, editing) and Cinematography. Personally, I don’t agree with the last one. The Social Network grabbed three Oscars. As expected it grabbed the honor for Best Editing and Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and surprised with the Music (Original Score) Nomination. Many expected 127 Hours to make a mark. Pixar’s Toy Story-3 also bagged two honors.

Rahman failed to impress the Jury. That could have been a high for Indian Cinema. When Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 Oscars, many hailed it as a victory of Bollywood over Hollywood as the movie was almost a typical Bollywood movie save for the packaging it had. Rahman’s victory with 127 Hours would have cemented it. Anyways… better luck next time…

High: Victory of ‘God Of love’ in Short Film Category.

Low: Many… for me… Rahman failing in getting the Oscar.

Citizen Kane And Inception | Cine Talk

What was common between Citizen Kane and Inception? Umm… both are great movies. Right. Both are intellectually demanding. Yes. And… what else?

Both Citizen Kane and Inception talk about one simple thing. “Life Lies In Small Happiness Than Great Fortunes.” The character in focus tried to live the way they wanted still there was a want of something that was far less material and far more spiritual. Be it the sledge in Citizen Kane or be it the paper wind-wheel in Inception. The desires are usually more centric towards simple things than greater ones.

Think over it and let us know.

Inception Movie Review | The Critique

Some movies are simply a big mind game with its audiences. Whatever they call such movies; Chris Nolan is a pioneer of that genre. Hugely acclaimed Memento and The Dark Knight’s maker raise the cinematic experience of his movies to a higher level. Inception in one word is awesome.

Inception is about dreams and a hypothetical theory that we can influence some one’s dreams (I hope its hypothetical). Dom (Leonardo) is one such manipulator. With his friends and aides he plays with dreams of people to earn money. Dom wants to return to his children but he cannot, as he is wanted in his country. He wants to live in present but his past echoes in his psyche. He gets an offer to insert a thought into some one’s mind and in lieu he everything will be arranged. How he does it is the crux of the movie. Will he be ever able to forget his past? Will he be able to return home? Will inception be successful?

Strolling brilliantly between the different levels of dreams during inception, direction, cinematography, concept and performances; everything falls into right places like a big jigsaw. You will be simply awestruck by the development of the inception theory and the way everything is arranged. The movie itself is a maze and you need to be hyper-alert o understand it fully. The story and the concept deserve a big round of applause.

Inception has some amazing scenes. One, Ariadne, the architect of dreams folds the city and then weaves the bridge out of nothing. The personal dream world of Dom. The car being chased in a particular level of dream. And the classic one; paradoxes. Leonardo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthus and Ellen Page as Ariadne did justice to their roles but the delight of acting was provided by Ken Watanabe as the businessmen who gives the assignment. He was really good.

Watch this movie. Highly recommended… And get with an answer. There is a slight indirect reference to Citizen Kane (intentional of not; I don’t know). What is it?
