Ali: 2009 was a great year for us at TheReelMag. We started our journey on April 15th and now in 18th edition, we declared nominations for Blue Notebook- First Annual Celebration For Excellence In Cinema. We grew from a few to thousands of hits. Some highs and lows and see the response…
Sujoy: Yup… we started as two and many joined us in our endeavor to find the best in cinema. You remember, you had some reservations about Blue Notebook in the first place. See the crazy response. We never expected this… Mark my words, the road is endless, and we have just started.
Ali: Moreover, the results have been pleasantly surprising. So lets gear up. What do you think about the greatest controversy… Vidhu yelling at media?
Sujoy: Frankly telling, I am partly on Chetan’s side. Anybody who have read the book will agree with him to a great extent. I agree Vidhu had law with him but still…
Ali: And that brings us to the Best Story Category. The Award goes to… “ROCKET SINGH” for its stunning out of box story about normal people. The story was slightly inspired by Michael Dell’s life; we feel so.
Sujoy: Deserving. Though 3 Idiots team also deserve some applause for their script and Bhagat’s novel. Ali, sometime I wonder how the guys in 50’s and 60’s were able to extract such alluring movies with B&W colors and limited technology.
Ali: Sometimes constraints brings out the best…
Sujoy: Absolutely. Creating outdoors on stage and cutting reels to edit…
Ali: Next up is Best Art Direction… The Award goes to… “DELHI 6” for grabbing the beauty and chaos of Delhi and recreating the scenes. By the way Delhi 6 was my personal favorite.
Moving on to Best Editing Category. No prizes for guessing… The Award goes to “KAMINEY”.
Sujoy: Dear moifightclub, I agree that you didn’t agree with me nominating Paa for Editing Category but just like you, I also disagree. When I talked with friends around me, most of them all remarked that the sequencing of scenes were really good and I felt that it deserves it. I will take that happily. So, when should I attend your class…
Ali: Anyways, moving to the next category… Music made us proud at Oscars last year. Infact, music has been our strength from days of Alam Ara… The Best Music Category… And the Award goes to… “DELHI 6”… Truly… Rahman is great.
Sujoy: Yeah. Rahman is back… NOTE to all fans of Dev D's Music- This was our first faux pas of the year. DEV D should have been nominated but somehow this happened. I guess that had offended many. Sorry boss… Won’t happen next year. Anyways, Ali, once I told you that cinema has no boundary… no language… and sometimes no sense as well. But I guess there is no category for the last one.
Ali: Point taken… Yes moving on to the next category… Best Movie in Foreign Language Category… the Award goes to… “INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS”… Tarantino is simply ahead of the rest.
and the Best Movie in Regional Language Category… The Award goes to… “HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY”
Sujoy: Both movies are brilliant but I would like to mention two movies… In Bengali… Kaal Bela deserves a special mention. Its brilliant. Also… Avatar. Cameroon is a real genius artiste…
Ali: Why do you think Male and Female deserves to be in same category… you were bashed like anything for this. I love Sujoy-Bashing… Trust me on that :-) .
Sujoy: We always say that this is a male dominated industry and see some nominations of past. Ladies who had no role got nomination with some really alluring performances. That belittle the latter ones. Actors are performers first and after that their gender comes in. You can compare greatness in Amitabh and Rani in Black but can you compare Rani with some arm-candy. That will be disgraceful for Rani. We wanted to recognize the best in cinema but not on the basis of their gender or screen presence. Another thing, Shahid missed the nomination by a whisker. Its just that we need to put a upper cap to the list. Don’t you think so. Bringing in Shahid meant putting someone out… That would have been inappropriate.
Ali: Declaring the award of Best Acting Performance… And the Award goes to… “ABHAY DEOL”
Sujoy: Why do we remember Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt… They were real showmen. They dreamt and created some finest works on celluloid. Have you seen Pyaasa. Its brilliant…
Ali: Yes Sujoy. Sometimes even the word brilliant is small sometimes… The Best Director Category… And the Award goes to… “VISHAL BHARDWAJ” for Kaminey. See his line up… Maqbool, Omkara and now Kaminey. And before we forget… Makdee and Blue Umbrella too.
Sujoy: Coming to the final category… All these components.. Editing, Art Direction, Music etc. etc. leads to?
Ali: Movie… Yes. Some movies are really perfect. Frame by frame… You know Sujoy, we have a short movie event as well.
Sujoy: Yes… Between Breaths… But don’t know something that what exactly is in store for winners…
Ali: What?
Sujoy: TRM have planned a lot… Tees, goodies and finally… vouchers. More details would come up later. Lets stay here only…
Ali: Sure… Finally, the Best Movie Award… There is a strong difference in opinion between our team and our readers. But… for us Readers are most important asset. We take their point. The Award goes to… “3 IDIOTS”. However, our panel’s choice was "DEV D". Anyways… 3 IDIOTS also deserved it. That’s why they were right there on the list.
Sujoy: Finally, its over now. Blue Notebook was a success beyond our expectations. We were mesmerized by the response we got. Thank you for all the appreciation…
Ali: Sujoy… don’t forget the bashings…
Sujoy: I love them… Thank you for everything…
Ali: Thank You to each and every one who participate in this celebration of cinema
and FINALLY, summing it all up…
Best Movie: 3 Idiots; Best Director: Vishal Bhardwaj; Best Actor: Abahy Deol; Best Regional Movie: Harishchandrachi Factory; Best Foreign Movie: Inglourious Basterds; Best Story: Rocket Singh; Best Music: Delhi 6; Best Editing: Kaminey; Best Art Direction: Delhi 6.
